For those "I'm bored" moments
We’ve all been there. Bored kid = stressed adult. We don’t always have a toy, game, or book to keep us entertained, so here’s a great way to show children how to use their imagination to take them somewhere new. When we reach beyond the box of familiarity, we’re flexing our creativity muscles and building confidence in our own ideas and voice.

Start a Story!
It’s as simple as it sounds. Come up with the beginning of a story and have your children take over and finish the story. You can help them if they need support and give suggestions, but try not to take over. It might start out rocky and take time for your child to get their creative wheels turning and that’s okay. It’s fun to see where your child’s creative thinking takes them and this shows children the power of their own imagination. This is a good activity to keep in your back pocket for those “I’m bored” moments.
Getting started: Maybe your story starts out with a lost pirate at sea that ends up on an unknown island - what happens next? Maybe it starts with a frog named Gibbs who goes looking for his hat and meets someone new - who did he meet and what happens next? It’s up to you how detailed you want to get with the intro of this story. Keep in mind the older the child, likely the more detailed the story will be.
*Creativity Tip: Your enthusiasm as the parent or adult makes a big difference in how engaged and excited our children will get and don’t be afraid to get real imaginative!
Have fun imagining! :)
